The History
The Pilates Method was developed by German-born Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920's. It is a series of controlled movements that engage both body and mind which were developed based on his experience with yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, and other fitness techniques. These movements are usually performed on specially designed equipment such as the Supreme Pilates machine or with smaller items such as the ball, ring or mat.
The techniques first gained popularity amongst dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine who found they helped make their movements more fluid. Since then numerous versions or schools have been developed such as Winsor, Peak and Zone. But they all follow the original concepts developed back in the 1920's.
This form of exercise conditions the body without adding extra stress to it. Similarly, without adding any bulk it stretches, tones and strengthens the muscles.
The benefits of Pilates
The benefits of Pilates are numerous and with continued practice, the movements can be mastered and the benefits clearly felt. Regular practice of the method builds a strong, long and lean body. The buttocks, back and abdomen are targeted to strengthen the body core so that they act as a firm support system for the spine.

This is why it is recommended by many orthopedists, chiropractors and physical therapists.
